Colour conversations: An interview with Tash & Dom on colour psychology
For 40 years, M·A·C has empowered people to express themselves through makeup and colour, now Lick and M·A·C are highlighting the versatility of black in both beauty and interiors, showcasing how it is the one colour that fits all.
Read on to hear from two colour experts on their perspectives of the colour black in their respective fields, Tash Bradley, Lick’s Director of Interior Design and Colour Psychologist and Dom Skinner, Director of Make-up Artistry at M·A·C.
Question: When you think of the colour black, what comes to mind?
Tash: The colour black is a colour that everyone owns, whether they wear it or have it in their homes. In interior design, every room needs an element of black to anchor it. It provides a grounding effect that completes the space.
Dom: When I think of black, I think of its universal quality. It suits everybody. A black eyeliner, for example, looks amazing on everyone, regardless of who they are or where they are going. It's always chic.
Tash: I love that! It’s similar in interiors; adding a touch of black finishes off the room, like a little full stop that completes the space.
Question: Some might find the collaboration between M·A·C and Lick unexpected. Why does it work?
Dom: What I find really interesting about Lick is their obsession and skill when it comes to colour. Both brands share a passion for helping people express themselves through colour, which makes this collaboration so exciting.
Tash: Absolutely. Our partnership allows people to embrace colour confidence. We aim to guide them in expressing themselves through their choices, whether in makeup or home décor.
Question: Is black a colour?
Dom: That's a controversial question. Technically, I know the answer, but my heart tells me something different. Tash: Are you leaving them with a cliffhanger?! Dom: I am, I am! What do you think? Okay after 3, 1 2 3….
Both: COLOUR! Dom: I didn’t think you would say that! Tash: For Lick it is a colour! Dom: I know it's technically questionable, but for me, because you need all the colours to make black, it is a colour.
Tash: *chefs kiss*
Question: Tell us about the new Lick x M·A·C Black 40 campaign.
Tash: I've always been fascinated by the unique role black plays in our lives. In fashion, it represents elegance and sophistication, however, in the world of interiors, many view black as a colour that requires a level of bravery and boldness to decorate with. We are challenging that perception, showing that M·A·C Black 40 is the colour that everyone can have in their homes. It’s the most versatile colour, it adds dimension and contrast to any room and will effortlessly accent your furniture and decor, whatever your style. This rich, matt hue also absorbs all natural light, so if you've got a room that lacks sunlight, such as a bedroom or small space, lean into that by colour drenching your space to create a calming and cocooning effect.
Dom: Celebrating M·A·C’s 40th year with Lick has been an honour, as black is at the heart of M·A·C’s DNA. What has been the most exciting part of this collaboration with Lick has been exploring the versatility of black. Showing how it can be harnessed in multiple ways from fierce rebellion to clean minimalist, from a simple sheer sweep to dynamic overdrawn intensity, black can go from cool to chic and proves why it’s a must for any trendsetter.
This collaboration between Lick and M·A·C highlights the significance of black as a colour that transcends boundaries, offering endless possibilities for self-expression.
