How to pair your walls and lighting

Need a little help deciding how to style your Lick and Pooky picks? Start with these colour-pairing tips from our in-house experts:

  1. Don’t forget to layer your lighting. Not only does it feel more designed as light helps your eyes travel through the room, but it also creates a cosy yet functional space that's fit for use throughout the day. That means a ceiling light (even if you never turn it on, it’s a given), wall lights (no need for electrics with Pooky’s life changing rechargeable bulbs) and lamps.

  2. When designing your new room, think about the mood that you’re trying to create. Want a relaxing bedroom? Opt for softer, earthier tones. Creating an energising kitchen for socialising in? Add a bolder accent to create smaller areas of focus around the room.

  3. Think about your finish. There’s no hard rules around mixing metals in your home, however we’d suggest sticking to two in any one space. Gold and brass are an excellent way to add more warmth to a room whereas silver or chrome add a more contemporary feel and balance warmer spaces with a cooler tone.

  4. Let one element inspire the other.  If you’re starting with a statement light, pick out the colours in the shade to inform your paint choices. Already have your paint sorted? Choose a fixture that harmonises or contrasts in just the right way.

Colour-drenched bedroom in Blue 02 with Purple 03 upcycled headboard

The single Chukka wall fitting in antiqued brass | 20cm empire shade in Turkish blue

The Chukka wall fitting in antiqued brass is the definition of a classic. Paired here with a modern turkish blue shade to create a contemporary yet timeless piece for your home.

Styled here in this warm Blue 02 colour-drenched bedroom which reflects the soothing tone of the sky, creating an expansive, clarifying space. The headboard (upcycled in Purple 03) acts as a grounding contrast against the colour-drenched walls, with the Pooky lights either side of the bed acting as a focal point.

For a bolder look, try Red 02, a poppy-toned red that brings energy and warmth to any space. If you’re looking for something softer, Pink 02 offers a gentle lift that makes the shades really pop.

The Double Chukka wall fitting in antiqued silver | 16cm empire shade in natural rattan

Rattan is a perennial design favourite for good reason -  and it’s easy to see why. Rattan is warm, textural and brings an effortless organic feel into your home, with light gently filtering through the gaps in its weaves.

Lean into the natural feel with nature’s neutral, Green 05, a soft olive that echoes the outdoors, or keep things grounded with Greige 02, a gentle neutral that connects you  to the great outdoors. Thanks to its versatility, rattan also pairs well with earthier tones — Red 03 brings a warm, terracotta-like richness, while Beige 02 offers a richer, earthy warmth that ties everything together.

Bedroom in White 05 by @Annamhome

Cagney wall fitting in antique brass | 16cm orange ikat shades

The Cagney wall fitting in antique brass is a timeless room staple, paired here with a warm orange ikat shade for a striking contrast of texture and tone. For a touch of drama, go analogous - Pink 13 is full of character and warmth, making it a perfect match for the ikat shade. You could also lean into Brown 02 ‘s earthy undertones for a darkier, cosier backdrop.

If you're drawn to contrast, a complementary palette is the way to go. Try Blue 04, a bestselling decorator favourite that brings balance and calm, or turn up the depth with Blue 06 for a moodier, more dramatic pairing.

Finally, if you’re a neutral lover, try White 05 (as shown above). Creamy and comforting, this inviting colour creates a nurturing space to relax in.

Its gathered silk shade diffuses light softly, while the warm brass base with its layered rounded design adds a touch of Art Deco charmPair this piece with Taupe 03 for a warm neutral backdrop which enhances the brass’s warmth and the silk’s softness. You could also opt for Teal 01 for a moodier feel or complementary Pink 02 or White 06 (white with pink undertones) for a softer look.
