Sophia Roe is a chef, writer, TV host, and creative force, known for her passion for food and for using her platform to advocate for social justice. Sophia and her partner Chris co-founded apartment miso, an intimate culinary studio based in Brooklyn, New York City. Her studio is a place to create recipes, write, film, and enjoy. Initially, the studio was a white, blank canvas and Sophia was ready to add bright elements that reflected her individuality, as well as develop a space that visually communicated the brand of apartment miso. Enter Lick.

Her Lick Colour Consultancy first centred around a bright blue textured Ann Harper painting that is placed on a plain white wall behind the main space in the kitchen. In her TV show and cooking videos, the striking blue of the painting is seen from every angle and seemed like an ideal starting place from which to build a colour scheme.

Sophia worked closely with Tash Bradley, our Director of Interior Design, with several blue hues before finally selecting Blue 10.

This bright shade perfectly aligned with her vision for the space, and also complemented a variety of existing appliances, outfits, and accessories she already owned; “I didn’t realise how much of this blue already exists in my life”.

The bold blue stripe creates a striking visual experience for anyone watching Sophia’s content at home. It’s immediately recognisable as her food studio, and offers a distinctive backdrop for when she is creating recipes in the foreground of the camera shot.

Sophia’s unconventional cooking style and innovative use of ingredients, as well as Chris’ distinctive camera work, are reflected in the diagonal lines of colour in the studio and the content the couple produces. "I think we're also very untraditional people in general,” comments Chris. “The way I film is pretty untraditional, as is the way Sophia plates and cooks."

The couple’s creative collaboration celebrates looking at food and cooking from fresh perspectives. Videos from apartment miso are filmed by attaching cameras to ceiling fans, immersing the viewer into bowls of hot liquid, as well as quickly panning around the space to see Sophia in action. The content that Sophia and Chris capture within apartment miso is ever-changing and utilises the space to engage the viewer. The bright pops of blue paint contrast with the white industrial nature of the studio and reflect the playfulness of the brand.

Apartment miso is not only a beautiful space for Sophia and Chris to create together but also a professional kitchen –  a studio where beauty and function meet. With the help of Lick, this innovative food studio is challenging expectations and celebrating the unconventional.
