Meet Lulu, Lick Studio's Lead Colour Consultant

Tell me about your background and what brought you to Lick?

I come from a creative background as both a Jazz and Classical singer and also an artist specialising in oil portraits. I’ve always had a natural eye for and interest in colour - my teachers would often compliment me on how I could get the tones just right.

What drew me to Lick was their innovative approach to the industry. Lick isn’t afraid to break the mold—they’re changing the industry and inspiring people to reimagine their spaces, and I knew I had to be part of that. I also loved their sustainable practices and that they’re a certified B Corp, which is something I value deeply.

Where do you think your love of colour and design came from?

My love of colour definitely came from my mum. I grew up in a house that was vibrant and expressive. Her bedroom was colour drenched (before it was trendy) in red (a colour similar to our Red 01), our kitchen was an orange (similar to Orange 03), and the living room was a striking blue (similar to Blue 08). I know that growing up in a colourful environment really nurtured my creativity.

My family is also full of creative people: my sister was an opera singer, my brother studied Art History, my sister a jeweller and my parents were both talented musicians. Painting, making music, and creating things were just part of my life. From a young age, I was always wanting to pick new colours for my bedroom. The way my Mum would change the rooms in the house, would give me an early appreciation for the power of colour in transforming a space and how I could use it to express myself at different stages of my life. 

How do you use colour to express yourself now?

For me, makeup is a big outlet. My face is my canvas, and I love experimenting with colours in ways that break traditional “rules.” Fashion is another way I express myself - I’m drawn to bold and unexpected combinations and love finding new inspiration.

When I choose makeup or clothes, the colours complement each other and have to harmonise - they work hand in hand. If I can’t confidently express colour in my own style, how could I expect clients to trust me with their homes?

Even though I rent, I’ve always painted my spaces. I’ve managed to convince every landlord I’ve had to let me decorate because I can’t imagine living in a plain white box. My current living room is painted Pink 13, and it feels warm, inviting, and totally mine.

Where do you source your inspiration?

Films are a huge inspiration for me, especially thrillers and witchy movies. I love dark, dramatic interiors with rich, moody colours. Interiors in films are a form of storytelling - they reveal so much about the characters and their worlds, and I find that endlessly fascinating.

I’m also inspired by the people I work with at Lick—Ophelia, Ethan, Tash, Matilda, Amie, Jess—they all have such distinct tastes, and seeing what they’re drawn to always sparks new ideas.

What do you love most about your role?

I love connecting with people through their colour choices. To me, rooms are like people—they have personalities, feelings, and vibes. Getting to know a space as it relates to the people who live in it is such a unique process.This role gives me the opportunity to learn about their experiences, dreams, and even their anxieties. Helping them create a home they love is such a rewarding experience.

I also love the creative challenge of working with colour. When I first started, I wasn’t a fan of blue, but seeing it used beautifully in different homes completely changed my perspective. The way you pair colours can totally transform how you perceive them. For example, I wasn’t initially drawn to Blue 17, but when I paired it with Pink 02t/blue-17-matt-paint, I fell in love with it.

Would you say you have your own personal colour or design approach when helping clients?

Absolutely - it’s all about the person. I don’t believe in prescribing a one-size-fits-all approach. Every client has unique needs, and my role is to guide and educate them. Sometimes, clients come in with fixed ideas that might not work, and it’s my job to gently teach them what colours will truly enhance their spaces.

I always start by asking how they want to feel in the room and what the space will be used for. Once we answer those questions, we’re already halfway to finding the perfect colour. It’s a collaborative journey, and I’m there to ensure the final result is something they’ll love.

What’s your favourite project you’ve worked on and why?

One of my favourite projects was with a client who had a vague idea of colours and initially leant towards pinks. She had this really cool vibe about her and wanted something that looked interesting, so I showed her MAC Black! She fell in love with it, and we ended up drenching the entire space in that bold shade. Seeing her embrace something unexpected and create a room that felt truly hers was so satisfying.

What’s your favourite Lick colour?

Right now, it’s Black 02—I love its intensity, especially when paired with gold accents, ornate mirrors and picture frames. That said, Pink 13 is my all-time favourite. It’s warm, inviting, and nurturing, and its versatility is unmatched. It works beautifully in any room, no matter the direction of the light.

How would you describe your interior style?

Warm, colourful, Whimsigoth and maximalist. I love dramatic spaces with personality and rich, layered textures.
