DIY headboard idea: wall panelling
In case you hadn’t noticed, we’re a bit obsessed with wall panelling. There isn’t a room we don’t like it in—but have you ever thought about using wall panelling as a headboard? It’s a great way to add texture to a neutral bedroom.
We love how @fallonpowellhome has created a zen Japandi-style bedroom by painting her walls and panelled headboard in our grounding Beige 02. Whilst @krystaltrips proves you can create a sophisticated look for less, in Greige 01.

Or what about @edwardian_love’s White 03 batten wall panelling as a headboard? We love this painted look but think it would also be gorgeous left bare, for a Japandi style bedroom.

DIY headboard idea: paint a headboard onto the wall
A great example of colour blocking, painting a headboard on your wall is not only a cost-effective decor hack, but it’s a gorgeous colourful bedroom idea. But you don’t have to use all-out colour - try going for a neutral colour to create a subtle headboard effect.
According to Tash Bradley, our Lead Colour Specialist, “a painted headboard adds a visual focus to a bedroom, adding height and depth, so it works really well in new builds or properties without period features”.

DIY headboard idea: wallpaper feature wall
There’s a time and a place for a feature wall and we think behind a bed is one of them. A chance to use that work-of-art bedroom wallpaper that you might not want to use to paper the entire room, but instead to make a thought-out design statement.
We’re a bit obsessed with how @our_victorian_home has combined two of our favourite DIY headboard ideas in one: batten panelling and a wallpaper feature wall using Electric Poppies 01 to create a colourful sleeping nook. Take a look at some of our best floral wallpapers in a bedroom for more inspiration.

Creating a wallpaper feature wall is much like wallpapering an entire room—except you only need to do one wall! If you’re opting for the DIY route, read our fool-proof blog on how to hang wallpaper.
DIY headboard idea: reupholster a headboard
From using luxurious fabrics like brushed velvet for a grown-up boudoir or colourful patterned prints to make a design statement, creating an upholstered headboard is a seriously stylish look but one that doesn’t have to break the bank—as @tash_lickcolourpro proves in her grey Pink 01 bedroom.
It’s a great way to create a cohesive look in a room and to tie in different fabrics and colours or even use up leftover fabrics. You can easily turn a pair of old curtains into a stylish upholstered headboard, with a bit of know-how. No, you don’t have to be a master upholster to achieve it, you just need to be a bit of a dab hand with a staple gun.
