Take a tour of Mary Charteris’ fabulously colourful West London home
Musician, DJ, model, and girl-about-town—there are few things that Mary Charteris can’t do. She’s an established style icon in the fashion world, but when it came to decorating her first home, she admits “I had no idea where to start”. Describing how she always grew up in houses that “were very white and beige”; “I knew that when I had my own house I wanted to inject a bit more colour into it. That’s where Tash came in!”.
Teaming up with Tash, our Director of Interior Design, Mary transformed her home to reflect her bold personal style and love of ‘clashing’ colour choices. So, buckle up for a tour of her fabulously colourful and stylish West London home (and take a sneak peek of her epic shoe and bag collection).
Mary’s dreamy Blue 01 and Teal 01 bedroom
“I wasn’t sure I wanted a really intense colour in my bedroom,” Mary explains. “I wanted it to feel calm with a softness to it”. According to Tash, Blue 01 is the most mentally soothing colour in our paint collection. For the fabrics and furnishings, Mary’s gone for gentle pink linens and a dreamy, draped four-poster bed which creates a totally whimsical feel.
“There’s a balance between creating something you can live in every day and something that has your signature on it”. This bedroom does just that. The soothing Blue 01 on the walls gives the space an overall calming, restful feel. And then, when you least expect it, there’s a bold pop of purple on the floorboards, whilst Teal 01 adds depth to those diamond rattan built-in wardrobes.
From the bedroom, you are led seamlessly into a high-gloss green walk-in wardrobe, showcasing Mary’s enviable bag collection.
Mary’s light-filled blue, pink, and White 02 kitchen
The main goal for the kitchen was that it felt “light but still with lots of colour and personality”, explains Mary. It’s the heart of the home, after all, so the aim was for it to feel bright and inviting. Tash recommended cool White 02 on the walls, to bounce light around the space and act as a calming backdrop to allow her dark blue cabinets and warm pink tiles to do the talking. This room reflects that first-home feel when you want it to be fun but still be a grown-up space.
Mary’s earthy and cosy Red 03 guest bedroom
“I’d never had a guest room before,” Mary explains, “so I wanted to create something super cosy, something a little different to what they’d have at home, for my guests to stay”. Initially a little hesitant about going red, she was sold when she saw Red 03’s earthy, pinkish tones. So much so, that she continued the palette on her hallway staircase. The red runner up her stairs echoes the Red 03 in the guest bedroom. The goal was to create a sense of flow throughout her home, by using colour to visually connect different rooms to each other (what Tash calls a "colour journey").
Mary’s fresh and energising Green 08 guest bathroom
The colour journey continues into the mint-fresh Green 08 guest bathroom. “I wanted bathroom paint colour that would really wake you up in the morning”, says Mary, and Green 08’s crisp tones certainly do that. It’s a real juxtaposition to the earthy, Red 03 tones in the bedroom but it totally works. This is the only room that Mary went completely wall to ceiling, and now? “I want to paint all the ceilings!” she exclaims. “They’re going to kill me, we’ve literally just finished decorating”. We’d be lying if we said we hadn’t been there.
